Résumé

Fictional diaries by female characters in the French novel are the basis of a discussion of three problematic areas: the characteristics of a feminine genre, the relationship between such a genre and the status of the female subject, and the possibility of defining a feminine style. The implications of novels by men depicting women diarists are examined and compared to the divided feminine subject in diaries by real women and more recent attempts by women authors to exploit the fictional journal. The relevance of Irigaray's Speculum de l'autre femme is considered. The interdependency of subject and discourse remains problematic, as it appears that the style involved is genre rather than gender determined
