DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS: OCTOBER 31, 2024

“Healing is an act of communion” is a quote by bell hooks that motivates reflection on healing as a profound connection with ourselves, each other, and the natural world. Healing is often understood as returning to health or peace, or engaging in therapy or treatment that can be self-facilitated and/or facilitated by others.

Western and complementary medical practices are often used to heal or treat disease. This model of treatment is often described as evidence-based and patient-focused (or person-focused) and is grounded in systems biology. However, women’s and gender-inclusive health research and practices remain limited, underfunded, and often homogeneous, focusing more on medical interventions that are frequently done to women rather than with women. While current research and practices are beginning to address these gaps, much work remains.

Atlantis Journal is an open-access scholarly journal of critical gender studies. The journal is published by Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax/Kjipuktuk, Canada. This Special Issue aims to create a communal space of healing by exploring critical perspectives on health, wellness, and disease.

We invite interdisciplinary and intersectional feminist analyses that consider “race,” ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, socioeconomic status, and/or other dimensions of identity and social justice. Our goal is to foster a vibrant dialogue that reflects the range and diversity of experiences, welcoming holistic approaches to health and healing.

The editors endeavour to represent diverse perspectives and encourage submissions that represent one or more of the following:
• Critical perspectives on clinical research and health communications
• Transnational perspectives
• Healing perspectives, practices, and experiences
• Gender-diverse, gender-inclusive, and trans-inclusive approaches and practices
• Traditional Knowledges and health, wellness, healing, and disease
• Feminist perspectives on the body
• Intersectional analyses of health disparities
• Perspectives on wellness while living with chronic or acute medical diagnoses
• Perspectives on wellness while aging and in later life
• Analyses and experiences of mental health and emotional well-being
• Analyses and experiences of pregnancy and maternal health
Various form of scholarship will be considered, including:
• Original research
• Systematic or narrative reviews
• Commentaries, reflections and perspectives
• Interviews
