Abstract

The essential question asked in this article is: How do Active texts written by women construct their female readers on both ideological and libidinal levels? Starting from two types of ideologically opposite novels ( Les Guerilleres and Harlequin romances) and from a rough distinction between "feminist reading" and "androcentric reading," the author develops a problematics of what could be feminist reading. The ideological aspect is based on the notion of gender borrowed from some anglophone materialist feminists (Teresa de Lauretis). The problematics of "the pleasure of the text," partly illustrated by Hélène Cixous ( To Live the Orange ), relies on Kaja Silverman's psychoanalytical theory of "the fantasy of the maternal voice."
