Abstract

"Vous les entendez?" seems to be a very simple question. But as soon as one attempts to clarify its meaning, one realizes that the dialogue it is supposed to initiate is in fact a pseudo dialogue, exemplifying man's inability to communicate. The object of this study is to illustrate this general statement by focusing on the markers of the silent dialogue ("sous-conversation," "pre-dialogue"), which, according to Nathalie Sarraute, is a necessary counterpart of any speech act.
