Abstract

The aim of this article is to highlight the baroque figure of the 17th-century nun, by studying the spiritual writings of Jeanne des Anges, Marie de l'lncamation and Marguerite-Marie Alacoque. Through this process, we wish to show how each of these religious women, products of the Counter-Reformation, participated through her mystical writing in the baroque enthusiasm for a devout humanism, both by casting herself as a heroine in her own texts, and by making her intimate and loving relationship with God into a theatrical experience. The actual experience of writing here becomes a locus of paradoxes and contradictions, and it can be justified only by an extreme faith.
